Its Cold in Florida

I know that by comparison to the rest of your who are up to your ears in snow it is warm here, but as a person who has only ever lived in the Sunshine states of California and now Florida these sustained cold temps are hard to handle. I don't even own any gloves but gardening gloves. It is currently 27 degrees outside with a wind chill feel in the teens. I have done the best I could to bed all of the animals in with extra hay and quilts over cages etc. How do you all manage it?

  1. Well up here in Canada where you get stuck in snow in your own driveway...
we handle it by bundling up and snuggling down with sweaters, layers of socks, mittens, ear muffs, the works. Oh, and a big slow cooker filled with hot chocolate or hot apple cider. The oven on for extra baking- it heats the kitchen quite cozily. Horse blankets do well over animal cages- they keep in a lot of warmth. Heat lamps for the smaller animals if you have them. Hope your managing all right!

  3. It sounds like you are coping as well as you can. And I agree with GITPD- Layers and sipping on something warm. My only problem with baking is that my kitchen is too close to the thermostat so if I'm running the oven, the kitchen is toasty warm but the rest of the house freezes because the furnace doesn't fire!
Bundle up and stay warm- it was -5 when I got up this morning and I don't even want to think of the wind chill. It's warmed up into the teens now but it's supposed to snow 6-8 inches tonight and tomorrow.

  4. Here in West Virginia we have had snow for 5 days in a row. Quite uncommon for here. We have about 5 inches on the ground, thankfully is real powdery. But that makes for bad roads. I haven't gone anywhere for a week. Have plenty of food to last another week I think. The roads are not bad once you get out so they say. But why go out and rish running into a ditch!! lol...bundle up!!...debbie

  6. I am bringing my students down to Ocalla to swim with the Manatee tomorrow - we are THRILLED that its cold because it means more manatee. I do hope it warms up a bit in the afternoons just because we are going to be outside so much - in the water we'll be fine, but trying to eat a box lunch at the river outside is going to be a bit too cold.

  7. I saw on the news that there are hundred and hundreds of Manatees in the Indian River trying to stay warm. I can't believe you are going to be in the freezing cold water.
