Coffee Anyone??

I finally took a minute to take a picture of my vintage coffee grinder and thrift store coffee percolator. When I stop and ask myself what would I really miss if there were no electricity I think of coffee. I know for now I am dependant on coffee beans that are shipped from from South America but I did find coffee bean plants for sale on eBay and Amazon for around $8.00.

I found a link to the University of Florida's Ag site and they say that coffee can be grown in Florida or as a potted plant. Anyone out there ever grown coffee? I will have to do a lot more research so see if it is even remotely realistic to think about on a small scale but it might be fun to try. I had to laugh the other day I was watching the show "100 Mile Diet " or something like that and the families all complained that the most difficult thing to give up was coffee.

  1. Hi Laura I like my coffee too. My coffee machine grinds the beans and all, but without power never thought about that it would have to be instant coffee. Might have to invest in a grinder too :0).

  2. wow! what a fancy grinder!! I have 2 wooden grinders from Bob's grandmother's farm - I use them as decorations. Never thought to use them...hummmmmmm. Maybe I'll buy a small bag of beans and try grinding them. Love your coffee pot too! Our best friends swear by their old coffee maker and it is very similar to yours. I can smell it now!!...debbie

  3. Oh, I love the coffee grinder! I'm totally dependent on my coffee in the morning right now. I have gone through periods of my life when I didn't drink coffee so I know I can do it again if I had to. I've got no chance of growing coffee in Iowa- at least not enough to get a decent fix.

  4. Both great finds!! Its kinda funny....after I tried out our crank-grinder and stovetop perculator, drip machine coffee didn't taste the same. It's been almost 2 years now, and we tossed the electric machine and make ours stove top in either a perculator or non-electric drip.

One local store has buy1/get1 sales now and then on coffee beans. When it's on sale, we buy 2 or 3, and get 2 or 3. We've been buying it that way for about a year longer than we've used the perc, and have yet to pay full retail for a single bag. At the moment, I believe there are 16 or 17 2lb bags in the pantry lol thats one thing we dare not run out of!!!
